For the entire month of February, I kept telling myself that I needed to get a blog post up. Then I blinked and all of a sudden, it was March? Did that happen to anybody else?
Toward the end of January, I decided that it would be easier on my writing schedule if I moved to doing these posts monthly, instead of weekly. But I am a procrastinator at heart, so that made it easy to forget that I hadn’t written a post yet! Full disclosure: I have been working on this post for about two weeks. I definitely meant to have it posted over a week ago, but clearly that didn’t happen.
Another reason that I haven’t posted much is that, well, not a whole lot has happened. Not to say that I haven’t done a lot–I feel like I’ve been really busy, especially with writing–but every time I went to write an update to say, “Hey guys, not much has happened,” I didn’t think it would be interesting enough, and I talked myself out of it.
All that to say… Not much has happened, but here’s an update about where I am with my various writing projects!
I’ve been hard at work making major revisions to my fantasy novel, and making smaller ones to Veritas. Bouncing back and forth between the two hasn’t been the easiest thing because they are both in very different stages of editing. So sometimes it’s been a little frustrating that the fantasy novel isn’t further along than it is–even though it’s only in its second draft, whereas Veritas is much more polished. (I’ve lost count of what draft it’s on.)
My writing critique group has been offering incredible advice, and I really feel like they are helping me make Veritas even better. But after we meet, I have to go fix those chapters–and occasionally future chapters because our discussion sparks other ideas. So there is still always some kind of work to be done. Actually, as I’m writing this post, I’m procrastinating Veritas edits. I’m about two chapters behind on edits, and I really could use a couple of solid writing days to catch up.
As for my fantasy revisions… currently I’m still stuck in the first third of the story, which I knew was going to be the toughest section to clean up. Largely due to the fact that I originally started writing this one in third person before deciding that I was able to get into my main character’s head a lot better if I wrote it in first person. So now I’m going back and fixing the timeline, as well as converting the point of view.
I also went through a brief phrase during the first draft where I thought about maybe adding a second point of view, but scrapped that as I kept writing. So I have to make sure I’m picking out anything of value from those scenes and incorporating them into this new draft.
I’ve backed off pitching to agents a bit. Not entirely–because you never know when you might find the right one. But with Veritas being back in more of an editing phase, it feels like more of my creative energy needs to focus on the story itself at the moment.
All that to say…
Blog posts will be a little more sporadic for a bit, while I’m working on edits. If anything exciting happens, I’ll definitely keep you guys posted! But thank you for sticking with me!
