Short Story Contest Results.

I was waiting to post this week until I heard back from the short story contest I entered. Part of the prize was that they’d post the top two stories to their blog (the other half of the prize was AirPods!), so I wanted to wait and see what happened before I decided whether or not to post my short story here. I’ve got good news and bad news.

The bad news is that you are going to have to wait to read it because I got FIRST PLACE in the contest!

When I first read the prompt for this story, I felt immediately inspired and the words just flew out of me. I’m not used to writing short fiction, so I am incredibly proud of this piece, and it means so much that the contest judges enjoyed it as well.

I also gave it to a couple of friends to read, and almost everyone’s first comment was: “So… When do I get to read the rest?” The word limit on the contest was 1,000 words, so it’s more of a scene, rather than a full story. But it makes my heart happy that I managed to write something engaging enough that people want to keep reading!

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I always love writing prompts. Throughout this writing process, I also enjoyed the challenge of keeping the story constrained to a specific word count. It really helped me limit my word choice and really make sure that I was using each and every word in a way that helped set the scene or added to characterization.

Once my short story is live on their website, I will absolutely share that with you all. In the meantime, I will be spontaneously breaking out into little happy dances and compulsively re-reading the email to make sure that it really is my name listed.

I can’t wait for you to read it!
